DO YOU NEED A MULTI-VITAMIN?
Most healthy people get all the vitamins and minerals they need from their diet. Taking more vitamins and minerals than you need may not be beneficial to your body and in some cases may actually be harmful.
According to Berkeley University There’s no evidence that any supplement can prevent colds and infections, reduce fatigue, or improve energy levels. Some studies do suggest, however, that people who take multivitamin-and-mineral pills have a lower risk of several diseases, including colon cancer and possibly heart disease, and may have a better immune response.
In general, the following people should talk to their doctors about taking a multi-vitamin:
- The elderly
- People with poor dietary habits, vegetarians or vegans
- People who have decreased exposure to the sun
- Women who are pregnant, trying to get pregnant or breastfeeding
- Women who have been through menopause
- People who are dieting or who eat less than 1,200 calories a day
- People who are lactose intolerant
- People with a medical condition that affects vitamin absorption
The American Dietetic Association has an online test to determine your need for a multivitamin. The test can be found at: http://www.eatright.org/cps/rde/xchg/ada/hs.xsl/nutrition_5455_ENU_HTML.htm.
